Unbelievable Drawings on Dirty Cars by Scott Wade – with Exclusive Interview

Scott Wade ( DirtyCarArt ) was born in 1959, the son of a U.S. Air Force officer and housewife. He spent most of his childhood at the Air Force Academy near Colorado Springs, Co., where his father taught history and later became the faculty executive. While in Colorado, Scott received lessons in art, piano and drums, and played drums in band starting in 5th grade. Music and art always held great interest for Scott, and he continued to draw and play in the band when he moved to Texas in 1973.

Eventually the desire to make a better living for the family took its toll, and Scott found regular employment at a sign company designing signs, banners and decals. Soon an opportunity came along to try his hand in the corporate world, and he took a job designing graphical user interfaces, which he has been doing for 11 years. During this time, he discovered and developed his “Dirty Car Art”, which has brought him world-wide recognition. We have the great pleasure of introducing Scott and his amazing artwork to the PxlEyes community today, along with an exclusive interview he kindly agreed to give for us. Q: Hello there Scott! We are pleased to have you here today, at pxleyes.com community. Please tell us a few words about yourself.

A: Im 52, a GUI Designer and free-lance illustrator-graphic artist, and drummer for the legendary Texas accordion king, Ponty Bone. I live in lovely Wimberley, Texas with my beautiful, wonderful and talented wife Robin, and awesome daughter Marley.

Q: Your art is really special and a thing that not many artists think about. How did it all start?

A: Living on a long dirt road for over 20 years, the cars were always dirty. Wash’em, and they’d just be dirty again in a couple days. Plus, living on an aquifer, we’re always wanting to conserve water. The dust from the road base here in central Texas is very light-colored and makes great contrast with the shadowed interior of a vehicle. Who can resist doing something – writing “wash me,” “I wish my wife was this dirty,” or drawing in such a ready-made medium? I would draw characters – my father was a great amature cartoonist – and try to get some shading by brushing the pads of my fingers lightly, and started refining the fat line of the finger by using fingernails, twigs, whatever I’d find laying around. The real revelation came when I was eating a popsicle and had chewed the end of the stick as I was drawing one day. I took it out of my mouth, looked at it, and gave it a try. It was really cool, sort of gave a cross-hatching effect. I went to my studio and got a variety of brushes and a rubber paint-shaper, and soon developed the techniques I use today.

Q: Do you also paint/draw with traditional materials, like canvas and oil paints?

A: You bet. I particularly enjoy acrylics and house paint on a variety of surfaces, and do a lot of drawing with a ballpoint when I’m sitting in meetings. I also love to sculpt in a variety of media.

Q: Do you use anything special to preserve your works on car windows? Like…something that keeps the dust together? Or how does it exactly work? LOL

A: The work is impermanent by nature. It’ll hold up fine going down the highway, but the first hard rain and it will be gone. This is one of the things I love about Dirty Car Art. It reminds me to be in the moment and let go of the piece once it’s done, which seems to me a good lesson for living. So although I’ve been offered many suggestions as to how I might preserve the work, I’m just not interested. I much prefer a “natural canvas,” that is, one where the glass is coated over several days of driving on a dirt road. I love the way it works, it’s not as regular as the “prepared canvas,” and it will often suggest a drawing by it’s ideosyncracies. But when I demonstrate at an event, or do something for the media, there’s usually not an opportunity to work with a natural canvas, so I developed a way to prep the car very quickly using a light coating of oil and blowing on the dirt with a blowdryer or garden duster. It works pretty well and enables a really nice range of values.

Q: What is it that you love the most in this world?

A: Being alive; I think it all boils down to that.

Q: A little piece of advice please for anyone who’d like to become your “follower”.

A: Well, first of all, don’t follow me. I didn’t “discover” this art form by following anyone. My advice to all artists is just to allow everything to inspire you and to follow your own insticts. And really important: have fun!
