New York: flights cancelled after second storm

Major airlines cancelled flights in and out of the New York region yesterday as the area suffered the second significant storm in little more than a week.

As snow and fog blew into the region, services in and out of the northeast, especially New York, Philadelphia and Boston, were disrupted.

According to the flight tracking service Flight Aware, there had been 1,328 US cancellations by 4.30pm yesterday, with a further 381 flights cancelled for Thursday. The majority of these were flights from or to Newark Airport – the worst hit by Hurricane Sandy.

The latest storm also caused limited visibility at times. United and American suspended operations in the region by the afternoon, as white-out conditions developed. Other airline cancelled flights too. Affected passengers were being allowed to reschedule for free.

Technicians were working to fix navigational aids and other equipment at all three airports in New York damaged by the hurricane, which forced the cancellation of around 20,000 flights last week.
