- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 January 2014Great crime novel set in the Yorkshire Dales. It is very atmospheric and a really well crafted book. Thoroughly enjoyed it
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 April 2014This book would be worth buying for its evocative setting in the Yorkshire Dales alone. I have been to many of the places mentioned and can see them so clearly whilst reading the story. Whilst I agree with other reviewers that the tale itself lacks pace and urgency, I like the building of the relationships between the characters, and the gradual unfolding of detail. I have to confess that from time to time, I suspected most of the characters of being the guilty party, even the most sympathetic of them. I wondered if the author was setting us up to really like someone and then to reveal them as not being the person we thought they were. Although I did eventually settle on the person who proved to be the killer, but mostly because they seemed to be the least likely, it didn't spoil the denouement when it finally came, and there was plenty more going on in the meantime.
This is not a taxing read, and will not keep you awake at night with an urgent need to finish it, but it will pass a pleasant hour or so, and will probably be sufficiently diverting to replace the inane drivel on the TV. I will read more of the books in this series.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 31 August 2014A pleasant enough read. I thought the writing style had too much telling rather than showing which sometimes read like the author was ticking off plot details from a list. I enjoyed the character of Millie though because she is well-developed - not surprising as this is the second (?) in the series so the author knows her well. I liked the way Nina the cop took Nige in hand too. He definitely needed it!
So, nice plot, a bit slow, but some intriguing murders (and bizarre motive), good characters, and lovely descriptions of the Yorkshire Dales and archaeological digs. This was a nice read for a slow Sunday.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 March 2024Susan takes you in a tour of the Dales, excavation of an ancient site, whilst twisting and turning through intrigue and subterfuge...Millie is back with a group of students and professors. But who-dunnit? That is the question Millie and her new friends have to work out before they're next!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 12 May 2019The 2nd in the series of murder mysteries set in Yorkshire, this time it's set on an archaeological dig site, when Millie's housemates start to get killed, she has to help find their killers.
I enjoyed reading this book but was disappointed that minimal reference was made to Millie's Grandmother, who played a bigger part in the 1st book. It didn't detract from the story but I missed her in this book.
There are several twists and turns in the book which make it exciting to read. Add in the police officer with his very old fashioned views on women in the force and on his team, it makes for a different aspect to the story.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 October 2013Susan Parry writes such a good book. Very hard to put down once you get into it. Some very good details of Yorkshire dales, and as I have never been there I almost feel as if I can see the wonderful views.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 April 2012I really did enjoy this book, although I speak as someone interested in the Yorkshire Dales and archeology, and having walked some of the footpaths mentioned in the story.
I thought most of the characters reacted to the murders in a true-to-life way, especially Millie, and I really felt Nina's frustration with her male bosses in the Police Force.
The only drawback for me was that story seemed a bit drawn out, there was no sense of urgency, and no tension or excitement at the climax, although all the loose ends were neatly tied up and there were a few scattered clues to the murderer's identity.
I will definitely read the other books in the series, if only for the characterisation and locations.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 March 2015I found this very hard to get into, and there were a few grammatical mistakes. It was hard to believe the police did not investigate a hit and run at the beginning, and I guessed quite early on who the murderer was. I will not be reading any more of these books. Glad I got this as a free book as I would have felt ripped off if I had paid for it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well crafted, logical sequence, but a wee bit slow
This is a well-written mystery with plenty of dead bodies. The plot is logical but tends to meander and offer just a tad too much extraneous detail.
Interestingly enough, although Millie seems to be the central character, she is not the one who solves the mystery. Instead, it is a group effort with various snippets of information coming from a number of people and Nina, the young and often humiliated police officer, is the one who finally puts the pieces together.
Note: I realized who the likely murderer was about halfway through the book, but instead of being a turnoff, following the actions of that person proved hair-raising.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yorkshire Dales series is great!
I was pleased to discover this series when the first book, Corpse Way, was offered as a free ebook on Amazon. By the time I'd read the first few chapters, I was back online ordering Death Cart, Grave Hand, Craven Scar, and Purple Shroud, the next four books in the series. The author is currently working on the 6th book in the series, and I am eagerly awaiting its release.
What I like best about this series is that it is so plausible. Instead of being frozen in time, the series takes the main character through her late teens, her time as a college student, and into adult life as she begins her career in anthropology and forensics. Because the locales change, and through her friendships with members of the police force as well as her chosen career, the fact that one or more new bodies turns up in every book is not only believable, it is likely.
Wonderful decriptions of the Yorkshire Dales, characters with depth and personalities, interesting and believable plots, and accurate scientific and academic facts make this series one of my new favorites.

3.0 out of 5 stars A bit of a "Masterpiece Mystery" feel
With all the dead bodies amidst archaeological lore, I pictured Inspector Lewis scratching his head over the latest development.
The characters seemed quite young to me, and their romantic entanglements somewhat precipitous. Can't say I ever got a firm grasp on who they were intellectually despite the repetition of the fact they were involved in PhD studies.
The myopic and often clueless Inspector Brown rubbed me entirely the wrong way especially with his heavy-handed sexist approach but having read thousands of British mysteries over the years, I knew it would "get right" in the end.
As another reviewer mentioned, I, too, identified the perpetrator early on but could not puzzle out the motivation. Frankly, it seemed to involve more bodies than the denouement explanation warranted.
The scenery was nicely described, and I learned about an unfamiliar archaeological subject.
All in all a quite decently done novel.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good mystery
I enjoyed the good, clean mystery. I have not read the previous book in the series, Corpse Way, and did not feel I was missing anything. The characters were fresh and realistic and the plot was believable. It had enough twists and turns to keep my attention. I enjoyed the archaeological mystery along with the murder mystery. I am looking forward to reading others in the series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Historical aspects interesting Plus Mystery to boot
Not only the historical information being interesting; but, the core of the mystery with the Death Cart added lots of interest. I didn't read it in one day but I did have a bit of a problem putting it down when it was time to fix supper, do laundry and that stuff. If you like this type of history, read the book.
