Film March films begin with the 2015 Best Foreign Language Film Oscar award winner, Ida. With another multi-award winner, 20,000 Days on Earth, following hot on its heels, March is a fabulous month for film.

20,000 Days on Earth is a cinematic day in the life of musician and international cultural icon Nick Cave.
Bastards is a powerful, poignant and sometimes humorous documentary with a score by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
Fusing drama and reality, 20,000 Days on Earth is inspired by a line in Cave’s songwriting notebook calculating how many days he’d been alive. Delving into Nick’s artistic processes, the film explores his full creative cycle and introduces those who have affected his life. Bastards tells the story of an illiterate young woman who took on tradition, her own family and the Moroccan legal system for the sake of her illegitimate child. Awards galore A
s a venue dedicated to showcasing quality work, we’ve been excited to see the things we love gain wider appreciation with an award or two. This month we have one film and one show in particular that have impressed the academy and gained a healthy stamp of industry approval. Film: Ida Thursday 5 March, 7.30pm Fresh from Oscars success with a Best Foreign Film win, this PolishDanish road movie also took home the Bafta for Best Film Not in the English Language. Telling the story of a young woman on a search for the truth about her family roots, Ida has been described as ‘immaculate’ (Telegraph) and ‘eerily beautiful’ (Guardian). Agata Trzebuchowska stars as a novice nun on the cusp of taking her holy vows in 1962, when her family past intervenes. Under the urging of the Mother Superior, she goes on a life-changing road trip with sole surviving relative Aunt Wanda, journeying deeper into the heart of her Jewish origins. Winning praise and a second Oscar nomination for its haunting cinematography, Ida is already being hailed as director Pawel Pawlikowski’s masterpiece.
Theatre: The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha Friday 13 March, 8pm Later in March we welcome touring theatre group Little Soldier and their award-winning show based on Cervantes’ novel. Taking inspiration (and a hefty grain of salt) from a heavy-weight literary masterwork of the seventeenth century, Little Soldier’s gloriously silly version has been described by A Younger Theatre as ‘completely irreverent…it is childish, crass and chaotic, but more importantly, it is also hilarious…so much fun to watch.’ The Stage newspaper clearly agreed, including Don Quixote in its nationwide snapshot of the best shows of 2014, and presenting it with a Stage Award for Acting Excellence during its run at the Edinburgh Festival. Plenty of reasons to don a handlebar moustache and get down to this mad March hare of a show!

ur Live Lunch line-up showcases everything from Jazz and Classical influences to Dylan-inspired songs this March. Sunday 8 March: Drew Allen Inspired by Bob Dylan, Drew Allen is a talented young singer songwriter and guitarist. He combines arresting vocals, guitar and harmonica to deliver music that sounds as though it’s from another era. Saturday 14 March: Emma Ballantine Emma Ballantine blends Folk, Jazz and Classical influences to create songs in an eclectic and lyrical style reminiscent of Joni Mitchell or Suzanne Vega. Sunday 29 March: Ben Jordan American-born singer songwriter Ben Jordan performs intimate ballads and high-energy foot stompers with ease and charm.

hen we first heard about this show - “to be taken with a pinch of salt and a handlebar moustache” - we knew it was going to be entertaining. When the production shots came through we simply had to find out more so we chatted to Little Soldier Productions about their show:
What’s your favourite moment of the show? There are so many! If we have to choose, it has to be the moments of audience interaction, they are so unpredictable and exciting.You never know what will come from those. What does your Spanish heritage bring to your work? In Spain Don Quixote is very present, we have grown up surrounded by constant references to it so we like to think that we understand it really well. This allows us to be very irreverent with it and have lots of fun. Tell us about the role your guitarist plays on stage… As the play is really silly and mad we
like to think that she brings some sensibility to the show. She is the glue that holds the whole piece togethershe creates atmospheres where we can play. It’s wonderful how sometimes you do not notice her and suddenly you look in the corner of the room and she will be doing this amazing classical piece that has us in tears. We are really honoured that she is part of our ensemble. What would you like the audience to take away from the performance? We would like the audience to jump on our boat, to relax and drop all preconceptions about the book and classical texts. Ladies and gentleman let your hair down and feel free to laugh at us until your heart is content. Finally - have any of you made it all the way through the book? It was a lot of sweat and tears and sleepless nights. After a year and a half working on it everybody managed to go through the whole thing. ur family show this month tells a delightful tale of learning to be happy in your own skin. Packed full of adorable kittens, it’s a must for cat-lovers and families with children aged 2 - 6 years. The company told us more: We’re positively brimming with excitement for this ‘purrformance’ (sorry we couldn’t resist). Can you tell us a bit more about where the story originates? Our play is based on the wonderful picture book ‘Pitschi’ written by Swiss illustrator Hans Fischer. It is quite an unknown story in the UK but being HalfSwiss I was always read ‘Pitschi’ as a child, so it is an amazing experience to be able to bring it to life for UK audiences. What are the main themes of the show? It is all about a kitten learning to be happy by being exactly who she is with the love and support of her family.
What would you like the audience to take away from the performance? I would love them to take away the important message that you don’t need to change yourself to be happy in your own skin. As the show is interactive, it is great to see how each show is different because of the wonderful things each audience brings to the show! And finally, of course it is always great when they come away singing our catchy songs! What’s your favourite thing about working with kittens? Everything! I love how playful they are, and how each little kitten in our show has such an individual character and personality! They are amazingly soft and they love a cuddle, so we always invite the children to come up and play with them after!

he March screening live from The Metropolitan Opera in New York is of Rossini’s classic love story La Donna del Lago directed by Paul Curran and conducted by Michele Mariotti.
King James V is entranced when he meets a beautiful woman, Elena, in the Highlands. But he is dismayed to learn that she is the daughter of his enemy, Douglas. Elena, meanwhile, is in love, but not with James V or her fiancée…
A love story set against the turbulent background of the medieval Scottish Highlands, La Donna del Lago is based on a beloved poem by Sir Walter Scott. Joyce DiDonato is the “lady of the lake” of the opera’s title, with Juan Diego Flórez as the king who relentlessly pursues her.
Exquisite arias are contrasted with moments of high drama, from the stormy confrontation between Rodrigo and the King to the orchestral frenzy unleashed at the sighting of a meteor.

A
fter their popular performance of Echo, ZoieLogic Dance Theatre returns to our stage this month with a show that soars to new heights: What made you decide to create a piece surrounding the construction workers that built the Empire State Building? When working on my last work ECHO, which was about men being pushed to their limits, I saw a documentary on the men who built the Empire State Building and was astounded at what they were achieving in such conditions. I delved into the world of the men themselves and was intrigued at how close they were as a team and how they had to rely on each other so much. Does being an all-male company aid the subject matter of the piece? If so how? Yes, being an all male company allows me to make a recognisable environment for the audience linked to the subject. However the work itself is not just about showing the brute strength of men or their work life, it is about masculinity versus fragility. We invite the audience into our world, exposing the human emotions of men that are sometimes
not seen on the outside. This show challenges perceptions of male dance and demonstrates great physical skill. What challenges does the set present the performers? The set is a very volatile environment that constantly shifts, alters and builds throughout the piece. The dancers perform at height on nothing more than scaffold planks and manoeuvre a truss crane that allows them to be suspended in the air. This has meant that we have had to learn how to carry and place these very heavy planks and take precautions to ensure they are SAFE. Moving the set continually is a logistical challenge and to top that off they have to perform on a floor made of steel and wood. The hard work has paid off though as they make moving the set around look extremely easy. For those new to dance, what’s the special ingredient that makes Safe worth the risk? Following the cinematic story of 5 guys who have to move on a set that adds real risk to what they are doing.

About Fellswoop: Fellswoop Theatre is based in Bristol and comprises of two performers, a director and a musical director. Together they create a distinctive blend of music and drama. Fellswoop’s work: Fellswoop’s last show, Belleville Rendezvous, was a charming family tale that was mostly silent and relied heavily on visuals and grotesque characters. Ablutions takes a darker, broodier and more adult tone while maintaining the company’s signature style. Ablutions: Ablutions is adapted from the novel by Man Booker-shortlisted author Patrick DeWitt. It’s centred around a bartender who sips top shelf whiskey while watching his customers descend into nightly oblivion.
