Centre College to Host Another Big Debate

DANVILLE, Ky. - Centre College has become synonymous with high-profile political debates including Lieberman-Cheney in 2000 and Biden-Ryan in 2012. Now the liberal arts college in Danville has extended invitations to Jack Conway, the Democratic nominee for governor, and his two potential Republican opponents, Matt Bevin or James Comer.

Centre College President John Roush said the Oct. 6 debate will be a "mirror image" of the two vice-presidential debates.

"It will be in Newlin Hall," he said, "which is our 1,400-seat facility right in the center of campus."

Bevin finished 83 votes ahead of Comer in Tuesday's four-way GOP primary, but Comer has requested a recanvass. According to debate organizers, Bevin has accepted the debate invitation, while it is pending with Conway.

Centre College is partnering with AARP and WAVE-TV Channel 3 News in Louisville to put on the event.

The college hosted a debate in 2007 against then-Gov. Ernie Fletcher and current Gov. Steve Beshear. Roush said hosting debates is a responsibility the college owes the state and nation - plus, they can help shape the lives of students.

"It becomes a rich educational opportunity for our students," he said, "and really for students in the region who are engaged, in some cases for the first time, with what they judge to be a really important election contest that will matter in their lives. "

Charlotte Whittaker of Hartford, an AARP volunteer, said she's anxious to hear the candidates debate important issues, especially how to serve the needs of family caregivers - since she's been in that role since the mid '90s.

"I feel like the eyes of the Kentucky caregivers will be on the candidates," she said. "We want to know, 'What are they going to do for the caregivers of Kentucky?' There just is not enough help, there's not enough respite. You know, caregivers need a time out. "

Whittaker said AARP is involved in the debate because "senior citizens vote."

The event will be aired live on a statewide network of television and radio stations. WAVE 3 news anchor Scott Reynolds will be the moderator. The general election is Nov. 3.
