Could Hail, Caesar! be the most Coen-y Coen brothers film yet?

This article is more than 8 years old

The golden age of Hollywood provides the backdrop for the star-studded comedy by the Oscar-winning film-makers, starring George Clooney and Channing Tatum

It’s been a difficult time for Coen brothers completists because it’s involved watching Unbroken, Angelina Jolie’s sugary 137-minute plea for an Oscar. The pair gave the script a refresh and unwittingly forced their fans to squint for any signs of their work on screen. With little success.

But next year, they will return with a film that’s all theirs. As the first trailer indicates, Hail, Caesar! is an extremely Coen-y comedy, complete with a period setting, a wacky premise and a cast of stars they’ve already worked with.

Previous Coen cast members and regulars Josh Brolin, George Clooney, Tilda Swinton, Scarlett Johansson and Frances McDormand join Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill and Ralph Fiennes in this star-studded story set in Hollywood during the latter days of the golden age. It revolves around a fixer, played by Brolin, who must find the kidnapped star of a big new movie, also called Hail, Caesar!

The film also features 1980s heavyweights Christopher Lambert, Fisher Stevens and, as a Soviet submarine commander, Dolph Lundgren.

  • Hail, Caesar! will open in cinemas on 26 February 2016.
