Sorry to see our mercurial left winger of the 70's Nicky Jennings has passed away at the age of 70. I thought somebody else might have picked up on it by now.

Nicky was extremely popular with City fans, and no hard feelings were held against him by Plymouth fans when he left Argyle to join us. Jennings was an integral part of Bobby Saxtons 1977 promotion winning side, alongside the likes of Tony Kellow, Peter Hatch, Alan Beer and Colin Randall. A natural left winger, not unlike Tony Scott.

As with a number of players in the promotion season he was a good player, but it was only when the DVD came out a few years back that I realised what a good player he was. Always managed to get a cross in, could beat a man by guile rather than pace and was targetted for a bit of 'rough stuff' by Halifax Town. The DVD came out at around the time Nick retired and the day before he received his copy he'd told his colleagues that there was no film of him as a professional footballer.

In RaWZ we trust....Amen.
It was mentioned on the former players thread Pete...Though a new thread would not go amiss.

On the "former players thread"? Now that is sacrilige. He deserves better than that.

Could a kindly mod transfer the Jennings posts to here please?

Backing Gary Caldwell, thanks Matt and good luck.
I don't remember him playing as I was only five when he played his final season for us. That season was my first game however, a two one win at home to Oxford in Nov 1977 which he played in, so that was the only time I saw him play.

RIP Nicky. Always sad to see a former player pass away.

2 minute hobble from the nearest pub. Or in it.
Saw him play many times during my youth. One of our best of that and subsequent era's.

My condolences to his family and friends.

What sad news, one of my all time favourite City players.

City Drinker puts it very well. Very good player and one of our best. And made a second career (IIRC) as a probation officer

Thanks for the memories, Nick. You were a lovely player to watch, and a gentleman too. Robertson strokes it out to the wing, Jennings crosses, to Beer/Kellow and in. Great days.

Next season is the 40th anniversary of that particular promotion (1977), I hope the club is planning some kind of acknowledgement. Don't wait for the 50th, too many will have passed away.

Here's a forgotten piece of football history ...

Nicky Jennings' testimonial in February 1979 was the first-team debut of Britain's first million pound signing, Trevor Francis (his league debut for Forest came later). I was there, and distinctly remember the cowshed greeting him with ... "What a waste of money!".
