Michigan State Athletics has established a Mylan Hicks memorial scholarship endowment, the school announced today.

Created at the request of his family and friends, the endowment is a tribute to the former Michigan State linebacker and defensive back from Detroit who was killed Sunday in Canada.

Hicks, 23, was playing for the Calgary Stampede of the Canadian Football League. He played for the Spartans in 2010-14.

“Mylan was the kind of guy who always had a gleam in his eye and he always brought something good out in you as a person,” MSU football coach Mark Dantonio said in a released statement. “One of the best things you can say about someone is that they’re a great teammate and if you listen this week to those who played with Mylan you kept hearing that over and over. He approached everything he did going 100 miles per hour and this scholarship will ensure his legacy endures forever with Spartan football."

Gifts for the Mylan Hicks memorial scholarship endowment may be made through the mail to Michigan State University, Spartan Fund, 535 Chestnut Rd, Suite 200, East Lansing, MI 48824-4005 or at spartanfund.net by clicking on the "Give Now" link and choosing the endowment fund from the drop-down menu.

“The entire Spartan family is deeply saddened by the loss of Mylan Hicks. The establishment of this endowed scholarship by his friends is an ongoing reminder of a special person, great teammate and true Spartan,” MSU athletic director Mark Hollis said.

Nelson Lugela, 19, was charged Monday with second-degree murder in Hicks' death.
