Bruin Legend Fred Slaughter Passes Away

Fred Slaughter, the starting center on UCLA’s first basketball national champion team, passed away at his home in Santa Monica on October 6th at the age of 74.

Slaughter is a member of the UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame along with the other four starters from the 1964 basketball team which won UCLA’s first basketball championship. He earned the J.D. Morgan Award as the outstanding team player in 1963 and shared that award with teammate Jack Hirsch in 1964.

Fred earned both his bachelor’s degree in business administration and his MBA at UCLA before obtaining his law degree from Columbia University.

From 1972-1980, Fred returned to Westwood where he served as the Assistant Dean of Admissions for the UCLA School of Law and also taught classes at both the Law School and the Anderson School of Business.

In 1980, he became a full-time sports agent and attorney. His clients included Jamaal Wilkes, Clyde Drexler and Dennis Johnson.

Fred L. Slaughter is survived by his wife of 46 years, Kay, two children, Hilary S. Slaughter and Fred W. Slaughter, Fred W. Slaughter's wife, Nicole, and three grandchildren, Milla, Alina, and Dirk Slaughter. Kay earned her B.S. in nursing from UCLA and has worked as a hospital nurse for nearly 50 years. Hilary earned her history degree and teaching credential from UCLA, and has taught middle school for the Los Angeles Unified School District for over 23 years. Fred W. Slaughter earned both his undergraduate degree in business economics and his law degree from UCLA, and is a Superior Court Judge in Orange County.
