Eric Bailly suspended for one game after red card against Saint-Etienne... but he is still one booking away from ANOTHER suspension

  • Eric Bailly will miss the first leg of Manchester United's last-16 Europa League tie
  • The defender was sent off for two bookable offences against Saint-Etienne
  • He was set to miss the game after picking up his third booking in three matches

Eric Bailly will miss the first leg of Manchester United's last-16 clash after he was sent off for two bookable offences in the club's 1-0 win at Saint-Etienne on Wednesday evening.

The Red Devils secured their progress from the round of 32 thanks to a 4-0 aggregate win, with Henrikh Mkhitaryan scoring the only goal at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard.

However it wasn't plain sailing for Jose Mourinho's men, who lost Bailly after 63 minutes when referee Deniz Aytekin deemed his tackle on Romain Hamouma worthy of a yellow card.

The defender had already picked up a caution earlier moments earlier in the game for a tackle on the same opponent.

That was his third booking of the competition which automatically triggers a one-game suspension, according to UEFA rules.

UEFA YELLOW CARD RULES

'From the first match in the group stage, a player is suspended for the next competition match after three cautions in three different matches, as well as following any subsequent odd-numbered caution (fifth, seventh, ninth, etc.)'

However, following his red card, he will now serve a one-game ban while reverting back to two yellows for the competition, meaning if he is booked again he will pick up another one-game suspension.  All yellow cards clear at the quarter-final stage.

Mourinho was less than impressed after watching his side play around 30 minutes with 10 men.

He said after the game: 'I think the sending off was harsh. But that boy (Hamouma), with good qualities, and a good player he is, he enjoyed too much the diving and the simulation so he gets these situations.

'Again Eric is not in legal condition to play in the first match of the next round but again Rojo came in and did well and hopefully Jones is back soon so one misses, an opportunity for another.'

Former United striker turned pundit Michael Owen added: 'The referee might need to understand the game better but I blame Bailly for giving him the option to send him off. He’s given the referee an excuse to do that.
