Gareth Southgate told Manchester United youngster Marcus Rashford to thank the travelling England fans following the narrow defeat in Germany.

Despite a credible performance from the Three Lions, Lukas Podolski scored a memorable winner in his final international match to clinch a 1-0 victory.

England enjoyed the better of the chances in Dortmund, Liverpool’s Adam Lallana striking the post while Dele Alli wasted a fine chance after going clean through on Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

But former Arsenal man Podolki, who gave a speech before the match, settled the affair with a stunning strike past Joe Hart on 70 minutes.

After the defeat, several England fans felt aggrieved after spotting Rashford heading straight down the tunnel, before being told by Southgate to acknowledge the travelling supporters.
