Sharing our Constitution in Spanish

I Want to Educate America’s Spanish Speakers about Our Country, and I need your help.

My name is Paloma Zuniga . I am a naturalized American Citizen, who was born in Mexico, came legally to the US at 11 with my mother, and proudly took my oath as a citizen at 20.  I need your help to educate America's Spanish speakers about the American heritage we share.

I grew up in both the United States and Mexico and am blessed to have personal experience with both cultures. That experience has taught me to appreciate and value the history and foundation of the United States of America. As a naturalized citizen, though I am Mexican by birth, I am an American by choice. Studying America’s history and foundations guided me to make that choice. I made a very conscious effort to learn about the America’s culture, history and principles and to assimilate, coming to understand that I could become American and maintain my heritage.

Most Hispanics in our country don't understand these things and part of the reason is because the beauty of America’s founding principles has not been made available to them.

I have been traveling around the country, speaking to all Americans about the importance of the Founding Principles of our country.  I have become active in educating my fellow Latinos on what makes America special. I have been handicapped in that mission in an important way.  There have not been any materials in Spanish to share with them; that is until recently when I became aware of a very special book, in Spanish.

For any of you who speak more than one language, you are certainly aware that being bi-lingual doesn’t mean you have equal skills in all the languages you know. It is one thing to be able to have conversations, work, or shop in more than one language. It is quite another to comprehend completely very important ideas in a language that is not your first.

There are 36,000,000 Americans whose first language is Spanish. Although most are bi-lingual for everyday purposes, often they are most comfortable in Spanish. Ordering a cup of coffee in your second language differs a great deal from understanding the idea that we are born with the inalienable rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

I understood this problem of explaining critical American ideas to Spanish speakers, but had no tools to help me address the problem. This past February, I met attorney David Shestokas and learned about his book, Capsulas Informativas Constitucionales. He wrote the book in collaboration with Dr. Berta Arias , linguistics professor and first Board President of the Illinois Latino Council on Higher Education, (ILACHE), and herself a Cuban immigrant.

Capsulas Informativas Constitucionales is the first, and only book in Spanish to explain the Founding Documents of the United States: the Declaration of Independence, Constitution and Bill of Rights. The book, with 150 questions and answers, explains the principles of freedom, liberty and limited government that made America great in the first place. This has never been done before in Spanish, and I am determined to share these American principles with those Americans who will understand these things best in Spanish.

I want to bring this information to thousands of members of our community for whom it has never before been available, and I need your help to get this project off the ground.

I want to give away 2,000 copies of this amazing book to members of our American community who can best understand these principles in the language they grew up with.  The book donations will be targeted to leaders who will organize groups to have discussions of these important ideas and start conversations about America’s First Principles among thousands of people who have not had these ideas explained before.

Every donation is important, and for those who agree how important the project is and donate $35.00 or more I have arranged for you to receive an autographed, personalized copy of either Capsulas Informativas Constitucionales or its English counterpart, Constitutional Sound Bites.

The book donations will be targeted to groups across the country, but your help is most welcome in identifying groups and leaders you feel would benefit. If with your donation, you provide an organization or leader that would welcome these valuable books, they will be contacted to participate.

Contact me if you would like to have me, or the authors speak to your organization.  We will try to work it out. We are all so very passionate and thank you for your support of American principles. These principles are not liberal or conservative, Republican or Democrat, they are American.

We need to join together to remind each other of the things that should unite us.  Thank you.
