Sporting director Monchi signs four-year Roma deal after leaving Sevilla

Monchi officially joined Roma as the Italian club's new sporting director on Monday after ending his 17-year stint with Sevilla last month.

One of the men behind Sevilla's recent run of Europa League titles, Monchi signed a four-year contract.

The Spaniard had been recognised as the person who brought through the likes of Jesus Navas, Jose Antonio Reyes and Sergio Ramos at Sevilla whilst also signing unheralded stars such as Carlos Bacca, Dani Alves and Ivan Rakitic.

In a statement, Roma president James Pallotta said: "I couldn't be happier with this appointment as Monchi is widely regarded as one of the best minds in world football."

Monchi, who also spent his entire professional playing career with Sevilla, revolutionised the Spanish club, helping them reach 16 finals and win nine titles in Spain and Europe.

His scouting system helped rescue the team from the brink of financial collapse and turned him into one the most sought-after directors in Europe.

The 48-year-old former goalkeeper, whose full name is Ramon Rodriguez Verdejo, had a contract with Sevilla until 2020, with a reported buyout clause of €5 million.

"I would like to thank Roma president Jim Pallotta and the club's executive team for giving me this opportunity," Monchi said in the statement.

"This is an exciting project and I look forward to serving the supporters, staff and players at this iconic club for many years to come."
