Review:
A long time ago off the
coast of China there was a young woman named Ling Yee who fell in love with a
fisherman named Ching Yin. They were married and had a baby. One stormy night Ching
Yin did not return. Day into night Ling Yee stood at the top of a cliff
overlooking the ocean with her baby on her back. She prayed to Tin Hau, the
goddess of fisherman, who then took pity on her and turned her into stone on
the cliff. Tin Hau did this so that Ling Yee would no longer mourn. Would her
beloved Ching Yin ever return home or was he just lost at sea?
Author Natasha Yim along
with illustrator Pirkko Vainio have turned this old legend into a beautiful and
visual presentation for young readers of today. The Rock Maiden is based on an
old Chinese rock called the Amah Rock in the Sha Tin area of Hong Kong. This
natural granite rock stands 50 feet high and sits on a hill 820 feet above sea
level. Parents, teachers and young readers will enjoy this tale as a
read-a-loud story. Colorful drawings invite readers into the time and easy to
read sentences make for a quick read for any beginner. The back pages share
more about this amazing rock, the author and the illustrator.
