Trump administration defends controversial budget before Congress

Trump administration officials went before Congress Wednesday to defend the administration’s new budget — and quickly ran into turbulence.

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos defended a proposal to slash funding for selected school programs while promoting school choice and private-school vouchers.

When Rep. Katherine Clark (D-Mass.) asked whether a private school should be allowed to receive public money if it rejects LGBT students, DeVos says that decision is best left to the states.

“I am shocked,” replied Clark.

Budget Director Mick Mulvaney told lawmakers that cutting trillions from spending is necessary to avoid a fiscal crisis.
