Robert Gsellman is coming off two straight strong efforts as a starter, but could soon find himself in the bullpen in a key role with the return of Steven Matz and Seth Lugo to the Mets rotation.
If Gsellman is moved to the bullpen and takes to his new job and shows bounce-back ability out of the ’pen, there is a possibility he could wind up closing for the Mets.
“With that sinker of his he could be like [Jeurys] Familia,’’ one Met official told The Post on Tuesday. “We think he definitely has the ability to close. He’s got the stuff and he is fearless.’’
After recording a 4-2 victory Monday over the Brewers, Gsellman said he would prefer to start but would do whatever the team wants him to do — start or relieve.
“I just want to pitch,’’ said Gsellman, who is 3-3 with a 5.75 ERA. “Starting is a little more fun. I’ll do what they say. I just want to win. I’m just trying to get my confidence high in the sky.’’
Gsellman, 23, has made nine starts and has three relief appearances this season.
Addison Reed is the Mets closer with Familia out indefinitely following surgery to remove an arterial blood clot in his right shoulder. Reed is 0-2 with a 3.38 ERA with seven saves in nine opportunities. The right-hander has proven himself to be best suited as a setup man.
