Former Texas A&M president Elsa Murano meets with Trump over cabinet post

The former leader of Texas A&M spoke with the future leader of the free world Wednesday about becoming his agriculture secretary.

President-elect Donald Trump's meetings included one with the former president of A&M, Elsa Murano.

Murano currently serves as the director of the Borlaug Institute at A&M, which looks at improving agriculture to fight hunger and poverty.

She was A&M's president for a year-and-a-half starting in early 2008. Murano resigned after public disputes between her and the System chancellor at the time.

Murano first started at A&M in 1995, but also spent time in the George W. Bush administration in the Department of Agriculture.

As Murano left the meeting at Trump's Mar-a-Lago property in Florida, Trump was asked by reporters how his meetings had been going Wednesday.

"Really good," he replied. "Really good. Great people."

A reporter then asked if he had settled on a pick for agriculture secretary.

"Well, we're meeting some very, very good people," he replied.

Murano isn't the only person from Texas interviewing for the post. Current Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller meets with the Trump team Friday. Former Texas Ag Commissioner and former Texas Comptroller Susan Combs has already been interviewed.
