Cardinals news and notes: Wong/Diaz, HOF, offseason

Carson Kelly rated as #1 catching prospect by MLB (plus news and notes)

Cardinals v Padres

Jim Callis of MLB.com revealed his top-ten catching prospects yesterday and a familiar name came in at the top spot. Here’s what Callis had to say about Carson Kelly:

St. Louis has had one of the game's top catchers for years and has a worthy successor -- assuming Yadier Molina ever slows down -- in Kelly. He has the arm, receiving ability and leadership skills to win Gold Gloves, and his offensive game is coming around nicely as he gets more accustomed to working behind the plate.

Life after Yadi will likely sneak up on us faster than expected but it’s nice to know there’s a successor to be excited about.

Here’s what happened yesterday at VEB:

Wong/Diaz

Joe Schwarz wrote about Kolten Wong and Aledmys Diaz’s respective offseason work on the offensive and defensive side of the ball. And Joe’s right, @retrosimba is a great follow.

Cardinals Hall of Fame facts

I’m sorry. Although I stand by the Heathcliff Slocumb research.

Carlos Martinez

Lil Scooter is hear to inform us that Carlos Martinez is back in St. Louis and doing Carlos things.

Offseason

The Cardinals made a sizable, not big, splash this offseason. Ben Markham believes they played their hand correctly based on the free agency market.

That’s it. Have a wonderful weekend, everyone.
