Edison almost pulled of what would have been the biggest upset in the CIF-Southern Section boys basketball playoffs this week.
Edison took Division 1 top seed Oak Park to overtime. Oak Park prevailed in overtime 70-62.
Kaden Headington scored 25 points for Edison. David Atencio added 15 points for the Chargers.
Edison finished 21-8. The visiting Chargers were Sunset League co-champions with Newport Harbor. Oak Park is 21-26.
In the Open Division:
Etiwanda 67, Santa Margarita 62: The visiting Eagles got 22 points from Jake Kyman but lost in the first round to the Eagles. Santa Margarita (20-7) will play at Crespi (25-3) in a consolation game next Saturday.
In Division 3AA:
Twenty-nine Palms 57, Laguna Beach 54: The Breakers’ record-setting season ended with a home loss in the second round. Laguna Beach finished 26-4 and set a school record for single-season boys basketball victories. Blake Burzell, Laguna Beach’s career leading scorer, scored 26 points.
Crean Lutheran 78, Cerritos 61: Isaiah Johnson, a sophomore, scored 42 points for the visiting Saints (26-4).
In Division 4AA:
Silverado 70, Costa Mesa 67: Nico Dasca’s 34 points were not enough for the Mustangs (14-11) in their loss in Victorville.
In Division 5AAA:
Garden Grove 69, Desert Christian Academy 29: The host Argonauts cruised to their 22nd win in a row as Sebastian Castro scored a team-high 17 points.
Fairmont Prep 60, Arroyo 40: Kofi Aboagye’s 22 points paced the host Huskies (21-5).
In Division 5AA:
Century 43, University Prep 30: Eduardo Sorto scored 14 points to lead a balanced scoring effort for the visiting Centurions (20-8).
