JORDAN PICKFORD - 9

Reputation has soared. The first England keeper to win in a World Cup penalty shootout made great saves throughout the campaign.

KYLE WALKER - 7

Still prone to mistakes, as he showed in the semi-final defeat by Croatia, but no doubt his pace was invaluable to the back three.

JOHN STONES - 7.5

Lived up to hype of being the next Rio Ferdinand. Showed his ability on the ball and scored twice, including that thumping header against Panama.

HARRY MAGUIRE - 8

Became a hugely popular figure and rightly so. Strong in the air in both penalty areas and scored in the quarter final against Sweden.

KIERAN TRIPPIER - 8.5

Will be voted in many observers' best XIs of the Tournament. Lethal delivery from set-pieces and scored the opening goal in the semi-final.

JESSE LINGARD - 7

Scored England's best goal of the tournament against Panama but couldn't make an impact in the semi-final defeat in Moscow.

JORDAN HENDERSON - 8

Followed up a Champions League final for Liverpool by dictating England's play with a good short and long passing game.

DELE ALLI - 7

Injury disrupted his progress in group stages but bounced back with trademark run into the penalty area to score against Sweden.

ASHLEY YOUNG - 7

At 33, the oldest player in Gareth Southgate's team did his generation proud. Defensively sound and whipped in some good set-pieces.

HARRY KANE - 7

You can't knock a likely Golden Boot winner but it is a shame his form tailed off. Missed a good chance to make it 2-0 against Croatia.

RAHEEM STERLING - 7

Nobody divides opinion like Sterling. Hasn't scored for England since 2015 but his energy was behind the team's best spells.

TRENT ALEXANDER-ARNOLD - 5

Liverpool teenager gained some vital big tournament experience in England's 'B team' against Belgium in the final group game.

GARY CAHILL - 5

Experienced defender was drafted in for the final group game but didn't play again as Southgate stuck with his tried and tested team.

PHIL JONES - 5

Unlucky to come in from the cold and face the in-form Eden Hazard in the third-place play-off.

DANNY ROSE - 5

Pre-World Cup interview improved relations between England players and media but his performances on the pitch were erratic.

RUBEN LOFTUS-CHEEK - 6

Could have been used more after an impressive season at Crystal Palace. Proved an adequate replacement for Alli against Panama.

ERIC DIER - 5.5

Failed to shore up the game against Colombia but made amends with winning penalty in the historic shootout victory.

FABIAN DELPH - 5.5

World Cup interrupted by birth of his daughter. Could be loose in possession when England had the chance to apply pressure.

JAMIE VARDY - 5.5

Ran hard when used but opportunities were limited with Harry Kane taking sole striking spot. Groin injury affected him against Croatia.

MARCUS RASHFORD - 5

Failed to convince the manager to play him rather than Raheem Sterling but he showed flashes of his talent when called on.

DANNY WELBECK - 5

Did not impress enough to earn another game after he came on for the final 11 minutes of the last group match against Belgium.

GARETH SOUTHGATE - 8

Vindicated FA's decision to give him the job. England had a defined style and were well drilled, although they ultimately fell short.

Goalkeepers Jack Butland and Nick Pope did not play.
