Just when Swansea manager Paul Clement most needed a goalscorer, Wilfried Bony stepped up. He smashed home a loose ball inside the six-yard box after 81 minutes to give his team a vital three points against West Brom.

'I knew I just had to work hard and the goals would come,' Bony said. 'We are confident we can stay up. If you look at the league table, if we can win two games we can be up to 14th place. Then everything can change.'

After a woeful first half Clement gambled, introducing Jordan Ayew, Luciano Narsingh and Tammy Abraham up front.

Eventually it paid off. Ki Sung-yueng's corner fell to Bony who claimed his second goal in two games.

The strike moved Swansea off the bottom and dragged West Brom into further trouble.

'I'm working very hard. I would like to score more so the most important thing for me is to stay fit and play games,' Bony said. Swansea's next game is a daunting match against Bony's former club.

'It was very important to win because it will give us confidence for the game against Manchester City on Wednesday. They are very good at the moment, but we will be ready.'

West Brom were poor. The only real chance they created was a weak Salomon Rondon header. Hal Robson-Kanu should have done much better with a second-half breakaway.

Alan Pardew admits his team need more creativity. 'I don't know if we'll be able to strengthen the squad, I haven't had those discussions,' he said. 'We're going to have to look if we can't increase our goalscoring ratio.'
