The German international left Signal Iduna Park back in 2016 after spending seven years with the club.

The report states that both clubs are in advanced negotiations for a transfer although nothing has as yet been signed.

Dortmund narrowly missed out on the title in Germany following a competitive championship race that saw Lucien Favre's side lead the perennial champions for much of the campaign.

But experience told as Niko Kovac's side won their seventh straight Bundesliga title on the final day of the season, with a comfortable 5-1 crushing of Frankfurt.

Hummels began his career with the Bavarian giants before joining Dortmund on loan in 2008. The club made the move permanent for an incredible €4m (£3.6m) a year later, with Hummels going on to win two titles, one German Cup and finish runner-up to Bayern in the Champions League final in 2013.

After seven years and 309 appearances, Hummels returned to the club of his youth for a reported fee of £30million in 2016, following a well-trodden path of Dortmund stars to Germany's most famous club.

He linked up with former team-mates Robert Lewandowski and Mario Gotze, and together they won a further three Bundesliga titles and another German Cup.
