I am planning to rebuild a tile wall in an alcove tub enclosure in a rental.

I'm not sure whether I should buy a ceramic soap dish to attach to the wall or create one of those recessed niches in the center wall where the tenant could store their soap, shampoo, etc. The negative of soapdishes is they could get broken and knocked off (had this happen) but I'm not clear how much extra work creating the niche is. Thanks.

Make the nitch bigger to host shampoo bottles. I like the nitch idea. Soap dish becomes a handle! Well not at my house but in rentals! --99.203.xx.xx

Niche.

Soap dishes are outdated IMO.

But, don't build the niche, buy one. There are many manufacturers. Google "shower niche" and a bunch of them will show up.

And I wouldn't put it on the middle wall, I would put it on the back wall - away from the shower head. YMMV. --70.178.x.xx

Neither one.

They will sit stuff on the edge of the tub or they can buy one of those wire shower organizer hanger things.

Neither one. I much prefer corner shelves. Much more useful than a soap dish, and much easier than a niche.

Type 1: Take a large, square tile and cut it in half corner to corner. Glue the back sides together with thinset, and mount in the corner between rows of tile. Trim one row to fit around shelf as needed.

Type 2: (I like better, because water drains through the space in the back) Take 2 long, rectangular tiles & cut 45 degree miters on the ends. Thinset them together, back to back. Insert in corner between rows of tile.

Trim the front edge of them both with a narrow, bead trim piece.

Have fun!

niche creates a place to catch water, and if your grout is not perfect,to admit it behind your wall. keep it simple, the tray that hangs over the shower pipe. --73.141.xxx.xx

Niche. But don’t do on exterior wall since then it may freeze in winter (but u r in FL so no worries). And make sure the “floor” of the niche slopes such that water does not collect in it. --99.92.xxx.xxx

It depends on the class of your rental. I LOVE niches because they give a big "wow" factor. They protect the grout from rusty, mildewy over-the-shower-neck racks, and the enamel on the tub by reducing the number of items being dropped on it.

That said, they can be a pain to tile around and in. I put them in anyway--it's a one-time investment. But yes, get it as far away from the water as possible so you're not chipping soap scum off the walls. --204.210.xxx.xxx

Thanks. I'll watch some videos on the niches to see how much extra work this is.

It seems like if you put it on the rear wall, as Tim suggests, that would lessen the chances of standing water in the niche messing up the grout. --72.188.xxx.xxx

Niche sounds good and so does DJ's idea of corner shelves. I would actually prefer the corner shelves my self because you would not have to worry about rotting the wall out if the niche didn't get sealed well or drain well. You may even be able to buy the corner shelves or shelf system online. The corner shelves would hold more as well for more people. --73.120.xx.xxx

I do what DJ does, and I slop the 1/2 tile shelf down a bit for good drainage but not enough for the shampoo and soap to fall.

The cost is minimal, the effectiveness is priceless. --99.59.x.xxx

I build this stuff myself with the wet saw and leftover pieces, easier is build corner shelves with leftover tile, easier than that is the hanging thing that lasts several years. Bot don't forget to put in 2 grab bars, that creates a longterm wow factor, when you get them in quantity they also make great towel bars - just plan to get them anchored into the good wood - add the good wood if needed. --76.188.xxx.xx
